Sparrowhawk
« on: October 11, 2012, 10:44 »
Just heard the chickens squawking which is unusual for them, they dont normally make any noise.
I found them hiding in a gap no bigger than 6inches.
Then i saw the sparrowhawk on top of the garage. I've shooed it off but they're quite jittery and their eyes are out on stalks.
I dont think they are in much danger off being carried off by it, more likely it was interested in the aviary.

Female sparrowhawk will take large chicks so you need to be careful with your young ones.

It reminds you that under all the fluffy feathers and tameness, they still have their wild instincts doesn't it?

Mine used to dash under the coop screaming when the red kites first started flying in our area.  They have a roof to their run so were in no danger, but it scared them silly.

Now they ignore them totally even when free-ranging  ::)
