Floral climber that can be grown in a large tub
« on: August 26, 2023, 10:40 »
Morning all  :) We have an east facing shed which we have had a clematis ( Doctor Ruppel ) happily growing up the front for the last 5 years but it is in a very big tub due to the area in front of the shed is block paved. This year sadly it has grown well but has not flowered & is now dying off  :( which leads me to think it is pot bound but going to a bigger tub is out of the question due to space  My question is :- Can any of you wonderful people think of a replacement climber that would be happy growing in this situation ?
I look forward to any advice.  ;)

There is a climbing hydrangea (petiolaris) that is vigorous and self-clinging, also some climbing roses (see David Austin web site), honeysuckle and star jasmine that also like shade too. If in a large tub their growth will be restricted nicely so shouldn't go rampant all over everything.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Star jasmine is my favourite.  It flowers for ages, is semi evergreen and the scent of the little white flowers is absolutely wonderful. It takes a little while to get going, but although it can make a good size it isn't rampant and is easily contained to the size you want.  We've had one growing up the side of an arbour for years now, and the growth is still tidy. It started flowering in June and will continue until the frosts.  Some leaves will drop through the winter, but not all of them and it still looks presentable until the spring.

Can you move the clematis elsewhere in the ground.

East facing in a tub, it will be very happy good old "Nelly Moser"      Good luck,  Mrs Bouquet
