Storing over wintered onions
« on: June 18, 2014, 22:57 »
My Japanese over winter onions are ready to harvest - in fact been using them as spring onions for a month or so.
I hear that they aren't much good for storing but I could do with reclaiming the space. Are they likely to be ok for a month or two once dried and hung up or is it less than that?

Cheers,
Balders

As long as you ripen and dry them well they should store for a few months.  Not as well as those grown from seed.

Have the leaves fallen over yet ?  If they haven't then I would leave them until they do.

Then gently loosen the roots by lifting a little with a fork.  When they lift easily from the soil Lift them and remove any soil from the roots.  Lay them somewhere dry and airy , preferably sunny and leave them to ripen until the skins are crispy and the leaves dry and brown. You can then either string them up or lay them in shallow trays e.g plastic mushroom trays.  Use them before you use the seed grown onions.

Do make sure you ripen them or they will not store.  Neck rot could then be a big problem.

Last year I didn't dry mine as much as I could have.  Obviously they started to rot at the neck.  I managed to save about two thirds of my crop by mincing and freezing for use in cooking later on.
