Raspberry canes
« on: March 04, 2011, 17:15 »
2nd year at this growing game, and decided to plant 9 raspberry canes end of October last year. 3 Autumn types and 6 summer. Problem is im Not sure if they have died or not Only 1 is showing any type of buds appearing. The other cames look rather woody. I cut them all back to approx 6" off the ground when i planted them and followed the advice given. Will the winter have killed them. How long should i wait until i give up the ghost on them and dig them out? and is it too late now to put new canes in.  :(

New canes could go in now, however give your existing ones more time. Ours are only just showing bud.

Did you cut all of them back to 6inches including the 6 earlier fruiting ones ?

Summer fruiting canes fruit on the wood they produced the previous year.

Autumn fruiting ones fruit on wood produced this year.

I'll be honest and say I have no idea if you will get any fruit off those 6 earlier ones this year. Somebody will be able to advise

Nope, not til next year.

They will hopefully throw up canes this year that will bear next year's fruit.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Just to clarify - I don't think you've done anything wrong. You followed the instructions and cut them back at planting time. You'll need to prune each type differently in future.

It's just that you shouldn't expect to get fruit on the summer variety 'til next year, whereas you'll get some on the Autumn ones. Unless, that is, you bought 'long canes' of summer varieties. These are more expensive than normal bare root plants and you don't cut them back when planting, so you get fruit the next summer.

Don't worry too much about them looking dead. Mine are like that too and I expect them to spring up in the next few weeks.
