PROBLEM WITH COCKERALS AND DUCKS, ADVICE PLEASE!
« on: November 04, 2010, 13:13 »
Hello, I haven't been on for a while, all has been rosey in the garden, until now!  I've got several ducks, different breeds, 12 hens and two cockerals.  The cockerals were raised with one of my ducks (she was the only egg to hatch so my friend lent me two of his day old chicks to keep her company).  The cockerels are now of that age, but instead of showing any interest in my chucks, they are treading my ducks!  The ducks don't seem that bothered but I'm finding it a tad distressing.  The cockerels are in with the hens at night.  It is possible for me to separate them if that would solve it, is there anything else someone could suggest or should I just leave them to get on with it?  Any advice would be welcome.

It's possible that being brought up with the duck they think they're ducks. I think its called 'being imprinted'. Hopefully someone else may be able to offer more help.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Hi Is there any way you can actually seperate chickens and cockeril from Ducks for maybe a week, he won't be able to go that long if he is like my bird and he may get out of the habit! ::)

Hi thanks for the advice, I think you could be right, he thinks he's a duck! He was trying to tread one of my drakes this morning, so I thinks he's very confused :D Anyway, I think it's a bit of separation with his bessie mate for a week or so, see if that helps, love him.
