Water butt water, is it ok for a greenhouse
« on: September 10, 2011, 15:15 »
Hi all, just that really. Is it ok or not to use water from a water butt in a greenhouse. It has a lid & collects from the greenhouse.

It's my Mum's & she has said that the water shouldn't be used in the greenhouse. (She's always right !)  ::)

There is no knowing what spores and bugs have been collected with the rainwater, and I wouldn't water young seedlings with it because they can be vulnerable to damping off disease even using tap water.

I would think that most people do use their collected water in the greenhouse though, including me, but I do try and keep it off the leaves just in case (a good practice anyway, especially with tomatoes.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Same here.  I don't water seed trays or seedings with it, just in case I introduce damping off disease.  Bigger plants are fine with rain water but if your mum says no, I would stop using it just to keep the peace  ;)  :)

I use collected rain water for my greenhouse plants all the time without any problem.  Just be careful of the difference in temperature, I fill up a watering can and keep it in the greenhouse about 24hrs before I use it.
