purple sprouting broccoli help
« on: July 31, 2010, 15:47 »
I'm having yet another go at the purple sprouting broccoli (this year it's 'Rudolf') and I'm already biting my nails  :(.

Year 1 - no heads at all
Year 2 - heads began after Christmas, but were badly damaged by snow sitting on them. I managed to salvage some side shoots.

This year they're looking lovely, except that heads are already forming (2-3" across, looking from above).

Is this normal? Will they survive the winter or will I have to cut the heads off soon?

Sorry if this is a silly question !
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

I think with the weather this year, a lot of Purple Sprouting is all over the place cropping wise. I would harvest those heads before they bolt, and then wait for side shoots to form  :)

Once they have bolted, it's probably too late to salvage them.

I'm just off down the greenhouse. I won't be long ..........................

Thanks, I'll do that.

The treat of p.s. broccoli without having to wait for the winter to be over - result  :D!

At least you get to eat some this year  :D and it does crop for ages if you keep cutting it  :D
