Shift Parsnip?
« on: September 01, 2020, 10:34 »
Because of my need to improve the soil in the front patch of garden, by the cardboard and manure spreading method, it would make the job a whole lot more doable if I could shift my Parsnip crop (once the tops have died back) to the patch of rear garden. Any thoughts on this dilemma, has anyone done something like the same themselves. Extra note: I do want to keep 2 of my snips for seed production, so next years cycle needs to happen. Another extra note: Can the crop be shifted before the tops have died back, and continue growing till the season end?

I've moved them for storage during the winter before now and they were fine. I doubt there'll be any problem getting them to go to seed either - carrots work well if replanted for seed production (looking at the roots also lets you select better specimens).

Not sure about moving them while still growing though and can see that leading to secondary growth/forking.

Thanks Mr Dog, so when you shifted for storage, did you just put them the right way up, and in close quarters to each other. Maybe even touching isn't a problem? Buried just below the surface, and when the tops have completely died/gone?

I reburied them right way up, about 1" apart, along and between rows, with the tops just below the surface - basically used a metal pole to make a hole, popped them in and scraped back the soil to cover. Did it early winter and pulled up as needed over the next few months.
