how many potatoes?
« on: November 09, 2011, 11:26 »
Hi all,
presently making out my order for seed potatoes from the lottie association order form.

Can some one tell me ish, how many seed potatoes do I get for 2.5kg.

I am looking at Desiree and Sarpo Mira varieties, if this makes any difference.

Dont want to over do it or leave myself too short, not after exact number just an idea as I have no clue, might as well have asked me how long is a piece of string.

Thanks

The Garden Organic catalogue says
Quote
1.5kg gives an average of 14 tubers which will require an area about 2.5 square meters

going by that 2.5kg = 23 apx

I nearly always buy 2.5kg bags of seed potatoes and they have varied between 25 and 35 if that's any help.

(I only grow earlies which could well mean the seeds are smaller so I would work on the lower figure.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

They do vary according to the seed size. This year I ordered 5 varieties and got a 39, 37, 32, 30, and a 26. It's the same with onion sets. I ordered 200 and got 241.

Thanks guys  :) Most helpful as always.

This seed ordering thing is trickier than I thought it would be. Keep finding new stuff I never knew existed yet now feel I have to grow!!!

Ordered 3 varieties and ended up with a range of 25 to 45 sets. Planted the surplus in large pots which kept us in early spuds until the end of August. That aint right is it but they were good :)
