I am trying to decide what to plant up at the back end of my plot once I have finished clearing it. I want something fairly permanent as I have enough beds now for the rotating stuff and there is a large area at the side I have marked out for a fruit cage (once I have cleared the waist high weeds).
The area in question is about 2m by 1.5 m and is shady until late morning when it then gets the sun. It is sheltered as it is the part in front of the 'wall' of leyllandi trees. I wondered if this would have caused a problem but the nettles, bindweed and ivy loved it so I am guessing the soil is good. In other parts of this back area I have a,ready got autumn fruiting raspberries and a large rhubarb patch.
So what would you plant?

compost heap ?

Already done :)

Given half a chance
nettles, bindweed and ivy
grow in front of my leylandii - but it's difficult to get anything else to grow there because it sucks all the moisture from the soil.
The mediterranean herbs wouldn't mind the drier soil, though.

Mmm... It is obviously hard to tell in the weather we have had but I don't think dryness is particularly a problem as others along the same side as me grow stuff up to about 1/2 m away from them (which I took into account when quoting my distances). We are surrounded by 2 river/streams. Herbs could be an option perhaps...

Comfrey patch?

Ooh yes! I was thinking about planting some of that... That could work well!

Comfrey patch?
That's a good idea ours doesn't seem fussy about where it grows.

Blueberries like the acid soil under firs.
