Can weather affect hens laying?
« on: April 28, 2010, 17:37 »
Since the warmer weather came in my gold laced wyandotte Tilly has stopped laying. She was producing an egg everyday for four days and then having a day off before she started again. It is now five days since she last laid, having shown no sign of even wanting to, and she is eating and drinking normally. She only started laying in February, but as she is a pure breed could she be having a natural break? She is frontlined against nasties and there is no problem with red mite in the house. She is also walking normally - no sign of a waddle from being egg bound. Is it possible that the higher temps have affected her?

mine have eased up a bit too with the warmer weather and apart from the hybrids the eggs have got smaller . I think we went from very cold to very warm so quickly - hopefully they will get back on an even keel  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

it's not so much the weather that affects hens laying but the amount of day light becasuse like ducks, hens aren't seasonal layers. so you'll find that when we have overcast days ,i.e. less light, ducks and hens tend not to lay as many eggs but when it gets brighter they should be laying more. also when hens start to stop laying it could be a sign that they might start going broody or that they've come to the end of they're laying cycle (the bird version menapause in women)
Hope this helps

sorry but mine aren't broody (I have two with chicks and one that I have just got out of broodiness so far this year so know too well the broody signs) and it is with the better sunnier days that they are laying less and laying smaller. I still think it is because we went from snow and very very cold weather to hot so quickly whereas normally we have a mild spring before this dry hot weather  :)
