Runner beans
« on: April 13, 2010, 20:15 »
Ok my runner beans are doing far too well and need to be planted my plan was to have grow bags and trelleses around the outside of the house and inside of the garden and use these for the runner beans and cucumbers and tomatoes so my question is this how many plants can I put in a grow bag? I am assuming just the 1 but given the amount I have to plant I was hoping maybe I could get away with 2?

Many thanks Nicky

You'll need to protect them with fleece if your planting out now, its a bit early, I have'nt put my seed in yet.  Runner beans also need a lot of water, more than tomatos, so hard work growing in grow bags.

Not heard of runners in growbags, as previoulsy mentioned, watering and feeding could prove tricky.  I foolishly tried courgettes in growbags during my 1st year - never again.  Was watering twice a day and still not enough.

You could try them in a deep pot or trough (much more soil = much less watering)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I used to grow them like this in the garden... but you can see I didn't have far to go for water.

I'd chop the grow bags or compost bags in half and stand on end, then part bury a plastic bottle upside-down with the bottom chopped off for easy watering, and put 2-3 plants in each. So long as you water daily I think they'd be okay.

Flower buckets would be the other cheap way to get enough pots. I saw a pic on the web somewhere where someone had put the pots in a circle, couple of plants in each with the canes going up to a teepee shape. Seemed to have worked well.

There is a guy on our site with runners in the ground he done them the same date last year and got away with it. Try pots and see how you get on you got nothing to lose.
Thanks
Kris
