slow cooker chutney help
« on: August 13, 2009, 07:47 »
Hi all,
popped back home for a day or 2 to find toms beginning to blight  :( so ended up with 1.5 kg to turn into chutney - which no one else likes, but I do  ;)

Anyway, thought I'd be clever and bung it in the slow cooker - i only used 500ml vinegar as I know slow cookers need a lot less liquid, but it looks like watery soup, the toms have browned, it's a lovely colour, just not thick. I suppose I'll have to boil it up on the stove for a bit - kid'll just luurrve the smell!  :D

edited to add - OH has just "realised" that while I was away they helpfully went to the recycling centre - so now I have no jars to put it into either  ::)

I think when you make chutney the evaporation as it boils is what gives the thick consistency, so a slow cooker might not do this.

Sounds like th fast boil on the stove top has done the trick now though  :D

Thanks SSB - off to asda now to stock up on "value" jars - might put a plea on freecycle too!
