apple tree price
« on: February 27, 2015, 17:43 »
I bought two apple trees from a nursery online, cost nearly 50 quids, but for the same variety tree from Aldi, it's 3.99.

what are the difference apart from price?
Rain at night, sunshine all day long!

can't speak from experience as i haven't brought any from similar supermarkets.

but usually the cheap ones are poor quality and also sold in pots.

a lot of people say bare root are better than pot grown.

The ones from the garden centre probably had a specific rootstock, whereas from the cheaper supermarkets you can either get them on unrestricted rootstock or inaccurate varieties (both have been reported on here).
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

The ones from Aldi et al might well be fine - indeed, they might be fine more often than not ...

Possible downsides, from messages I see on the forums each year, are:

Unknown rootstock

Mislabelled - isn't the variety that was expected, sometimes get Pear instead of Apple or Blackberry instead of Tayberry etc. (Can happen from specialist nursery too, of course, but seems to be not uncommon from box-shifters and several comments like "Only cost a quid so I didn't bother to take it back / complain"

Makes me wonder if the cheap deals in Aldi et al are shifting end-of-line plants, including "lost the label" that could otherwise not be sold?

I also read on forums of "Can't see a graft" and so on.

If you have a variety in mind and buy that, cheaply (and its labelled correctly, natch!) then fine, but it seems to me that many people buy it 'coz it "looks nice". Thus they wind up with a variety without also buying a pollination partner (the label may be silent as to pollination group, so no way of knowing, in store, which other variety to buy if you don't know / to look up on phone etc).

Length of time the plant has been out of the ground and stuffed in a plastic bag?  Perhaps also roots more heavily pruned than from a specialist nursery (there has to be less care & attention for the price point?)

Buying from a specialist nursery also makes available advice on suitable variety for your soil / location / conditions.

Personally I wouldn't buy a fruit tree if I had not already tasted that variety and knew it was one I liked.  What's the point of spending several years growing the plant to fruiting maturity to then hate, or only mildly-like the fruit?

I am currently doing a RHS course and we took a look at these a couple of weeks back and found a number of issues.  Some had no visible graft which meant that if they were the varieties that they were supposed to be they were on their own roots and would be far too big for any normal size garden or allotment.  Some had very poor grafts and very poor roots.  One wasn't even the species it was labelled as (supposed to be a pear but was actually an apple).  We were unable to ascertain which pollenating groups the pears were.  But by far the most concerning for us was the issue of the plant passport - a few had no passport or label present that we were able to check but the ones that did had different passport numbers on the passport to those on the labels, this means that they could potentially pose a threat to all our native trees as it is impossible to know where they come from or whether they are disease free.

As much as I like getting a bargain I must say I am very reluctant to buy plants from discount stores for the above reasons and because I believe that it is not possible to viably produce a properly grafted tree for this sort of money and we are getting involved in a race to the bottom that will see the skills of horticulture disappear.  Having seen first hand the amount of time and skill that goes into producing grafted trees and nice plants I am trying my hardest to source everything I can from small scale local nurseries.

I know a bargain is a bargain :) but I struggle even on the price-point for something like an Apple tree.  The weight of fruit from an apple tree, once it starts producing a decent harvest after, say, 3 years is going to exceed the price of the tree, from even a posh nursery! each year, let alone over the lifetime of the tree ...

I'd agree with most of the comments. If buying from a reputable nursery like Ashridge or R.V. Rogers you can pretty much guarantee that you are going to get a strong, disease-free tree that actually is what it says on the label. I've bought cheapies as well over the years and always the quality plants make the best trees after a few years.

Ebiana, what you say about plant passports is so interesting. How is it that commercial giants like Aldi could get away with, as you say, potentially threatening our native trees? Where are Customs in this process?
I don't really look like my avatar.

If a species is not actually on the banned list (like Ash is currently) then plants can freely move in from EU ... an example is the Box Sheds being full of Cannas with virus every year, those plants come over from Holland I think?

Here in Ireland the Customs are up to their eyes watching for drugs and counterfeit goods.  I am afraid looking at plant passports comes very far down the list of priorities.

Same here in the UK, I'm sure... But hey, what's more damaging - some dodgy trainers, or a disease that threatens to wipe out an entire species of native tree?
