Decking screws for a new raised bed
« on: February 06, 2014, 12:59 »
I managed to get some wood (6" x 2") so I am now in the process of making 2 or 3 raised beds, for the lower (wet) part of the allotment.

I might make others too, but they will be more like 'edged beds' rather than raised.

Anyway, where can I get decent decking screws in small quantities and what size do I need (would 4" be too long)

I've cut all the timber and made up the end pieces, with a bit of 3" x 2" in the corner, which are nailed on. The screws will go through the 6 x 2 boards and into the ends of the long, side boards.

My two local DIY stores only sell them in boxes of 200

Needing only 2 per corner, means 8 per bed, so 24 in total for now.

thanks

Packs of 20 available here Deck screws  but 200 is a "standard" box.

Personally I wouldn't bother with deck screws. M8-100mm Coach screws will do, I wouldn't even bother with stainless, something like these Coach screws get some penny washers, 6mm pilot hole and job done.

FYI - I put my 6x1" together with 4x40mm twin threads, 5 years ago and only 1 has pulled out.

Go to the local small hardware store and buy the size and quantity you want - I buy boxes if I'm going to use them again at some time in the future
