Title: My project and its progress - Pallet shed
Post by: stickmeup on February 11, 2013, 13:30
Thought I would pop some details in here of my project and its development

Idea is to get something on my allotment that I can house the tools in to keep them safe/dry and somewhere for my 3 kids to play whilst we are there grafting. a shed isnt big enough for what I want really especially based on the costs

So as all projects start, here's the to do list, as you can see, some form of toilet is important, lol

Bit of inspiration from doing a google search

Everything forward of the corrugatedmetal is mine and the hardstanding is going to be the main base but extended as it isnt big enough at the minute

Getting the ground prepared

Also been out getting a load of pallets already, and also got some double glazed windows of a double glazign company for nothing, will need to build some frames for them

and also a couple of doors, maybe using some french doors for the main shed and using one of these for the toilet room/cubicle and another for the tool cupboard

had a play with some ideas

and then had a shot at laying out some pallets so i can get an idea  of how the jigsaw will go together, its hard graft with different sized pallets so need to work on this, lol

I'll keep this thread up to date as more happens :)

I will have to keep an eye on your progress - I was thinking of doing something similar to build a green house as an extension to my shed If I can find enough windows. ;)

The toilet is a bold move. Is it on the mains?

Would have loved to but dont think its possible and i dont really want a waste going through the allotment into the park below, even just with number 1's lol. Think its gonna be a chemical toilet and ghen a working sink. Got water mains there so fresh water isnt an issue

Check that you are allowed to use the water other than for kettle, watering and animal welfare.

Yeah thats all fine, but essentially thats all it's going to be used for really, the sink just makes life easier for the kids etc

Base is starting to develop a little further but very busy at the minute so not getting much chance to spend time on it

Got some decent pallets all similar size to get started with

Ive just done something similar pallet floor boarded with plywood, but i framed my walls then did them overlap with pallet wood,it wasnt as big as yours though.

Excellent, you got any pictures?
Title: Re: My project and its progress - Pallet shed

Ill try and get some pics on friday.
Basically it was 2 heavy duty 800x2000mm pallets side by side, then i screwed plywood to them for the floor.I had 10 of these pallets which i stripped 8 out for the 2000mm 4x2s they were made with. Then i built my frame with these and screwed it together.I had some 8x2 timber for the roof beams i only used four of these. The walls were done with overlapped palletwood nailed to the frames. Then the roof was done with some tin sheets i got off a lad.
I get my wood from work in drips and drabs and it took me a few months to collect it all together ,so i waited till i had enough to finish the job in one go.
If your gonna build the walls with full pallets, are you going to clad it with stripped pallet planks? You maybe be better collecting enough before you build it. If your going to frame the walls, then clad them ,the crossbars of the pallets make decent framing wood if they are six foot or so.
Im no expert at shedbuilding,if you seen my first chicken shed youd laugh but it does the job,but i kept visiting garden centres with sheds for sale and having a look how they were framed out and the roof fitted on it was a big help,a 6x4 shed was £600 mines cost me £25 so far.

Just copied this over from my blog :)

Hmmmmm, 4 days off go by so quickly!

What was once the pallet shed… has now been re-branded the pallet palace, and not by me! lol

Just wanted to say a massive thankyou to am couple of people first

Jess and the kids for a lush weekend and still finding spare time for me to go to the allotment and graft

Norman for first of all the free wood and bits and pieces, and also for the lend of the black and decker scorpion saw (the railway sleepers were no match)

Aaron and Martin for their hard work over the last few days, the foundations of the pallet are really coming together, the shed which is now going to be around 10 foot by 19 foot in size, needs as good a foundation to build the base and then the walls on

Iain for the free wood again, they will be awesome for the roof joists which I needed

Also to Bill at J.W Pallets, fingers crossed I have 70 1000 x 800 wooden pallets hopefully being delivered to the allotment tonight, and I have a few people to lend a hand to get them there so that’s fantastic

Friday

Friday was an early start, after a phone call on Thursday from Norman, I was able to pop up to his new workplace and get a load of wood that was due to go in the bin which will be fantastic for framing around the windows and the door, so off up to walker to collect it and then back to the allotment to drop it all off, trip to my mam and dads for an hour (soon became about 4 hours and lunch but it was lush)

The afternoon was free, so off to the allotment, and what a start, we organised the base, under the idea of the new plan, we extended it over the original path and dug out the soil from the top bed, and we put the pallets down, 19 foot by 10 foot after measuring it, eek!!

We decided after walking on it, it had to change, it was too lump and uneven as it was to start building on, so it all had to come off, and it had to be flattened, properly, and then paving slabs placed over, so, the hard work began

We also started to attack the 3 sleeps that we had to cut down from the other building in next doors plot which overhung onto mine, something a saw wasnt going to sort quickly

Saturday

Saturday again was filled with a trip to Tynemouth market in the morning, and then more allotment work in the afternoon on the foundations, this time with Jess and the kids coming up aswell. We also had a good go at the sleepers, and managed to get one down, only 2 more to go aswell as a platform.

Sunday

Sunday was spent trying to organise our pallets, with a few complications we werent sorted, and didnt have enough of one size to move any further forward, so the day was just spent with the kids instead

Monday

Monday included an Easter event that we had organised at church which took up a chunk of the day, but with a glorious afternoon with the sun out, we were back off the the allotment again, armed with the scorpion saw that norman dropped off on sunday and the generator we were sorted, the rest of the sleepers and the platform were down in no time and the foundations were just gaining more speed after ripping apart the plot at the end of our block which is just a dumping ground and getting the additional paving slabs which we needed

I think the allotment now resembles a building site more than an allotment, lol

Had a delivery last night of 39 cement pallets, another 40 to come on saturday at some point, all the same size :)

So, the foundations are down and finished, time to get on with the mock up.

First thing to do was to get the base back down, referring back to one of the original pictures we took, we managed to get everything back down in the correct place, but due to changing how we were going to fit the pallets to the base, we had to drop the base size down slightly so we can fit the pallets round the outside to give it more stability

Once the base was down, now to check the walls.  We stood pallets on their ends all the way round, leaving a space for the door and adding the internal walls just so we can see where everything fits.  Now that the pallets I ordered have arrived, it’s quick and easy to put together, and I have enough of one size for the build.

We will be putting some anchoring points in each of the corners, a length of 2x4 which will be cemented into the ground and then attached to the walls, and then also an additional one which will be used as one side of the door frame to give it extra strength

The windows were planned and where they will going, and also how the door and frame is going to go in.

Next visit will consist of trimming down the base, anchoring it altogether and then starting to fix the walls to the base and getting the corner posts in, its now starting to take shape 

Looking good.  My only concern would be that the floor would be a haven for vermin.   :(

Dont worry, it's one we have also thought of, it will be sealed around the outside with pallet boards and a few small holes drilled in for drainage if needed

Ive struggled to think of any other better ways of stopping it

You might be better with a hatch so you can regularly put down traps or poison.
Title: Re: My project and its progress - Pallet shed

Around the outside or within the flooring inside itself?
Title: Re: My project and its progress - Pallet shed
Post by: ANHBUC on April 08, 2013, 17:33
Either but you will have to remember that if they die under the flooring the smell will linger for a long time.  Believe me you don't want so smell dead rat(s).  I once worked in an old building and some must have been poisoned and trapped between the inner walls of adjoining properties.  I can still remember the odour.

Might be best to use traps that way you can dispose of them before they start to smell.

Well the pallet shed has taken a turn for the worse, have taken on an actual building now, so there is no need for it, however, it now has a new use
