Roosting Bar
« on: September 15, 2008, 20:55 »
Hi all, Long time no post.

Just a nice east question how big in length and width / height  should the roosting bar be??

I'm running a bit late as tomorrow evening we pik up our 5 new birds! But was delayed due to deciding to saw through my middle left finger with a table saw building the blinking hut!!!

But any way if any one can help it would be great as the wife is going to have to finish it off tomorrow, while I drink orange cordeal (no G&T due tyo pills :( . )
Graham = 2x Border collie Dogs, 2x Cats, 1x Wife, 2x Kids, 2x Hamsters and now 10x chickens.

My hens bar is 3" x 2" they sit on the broad edge, you will need to round off the edges a little to it's comfortable, my four birds seem to like squashing up the have a 3'6" perch but only use 2/3 1/2 of it. So about 4-5 foot in length would be my guess. The perch should be at a height that's easy enough for them to get up to say 12"-18" unless you provide a simple ladder then it can be at a height to suit you. Mines at about 3' with a droppings board  8" underneath saves me cleaning the whole thing out every week  :D

Have heard on this forum you should have aprox 8-9 inches of perch per bird at aprox 2 foot off the ground, lower for heavier breeds and higher for bantams, we have 2 lengths of 1"x 1" battens which we have planed the edges off so they are nice and comfy :D

Ours is approx 2ft wide but is a little loose and on occasion have heard a whallop as my girls fall off with the bar    Think I'll need to put a spacer in to make it that little tighter

sounds like an odd question but how much head room should they have?  Just wondering as you could have two rows in a bunk bed style arrangement.

I did think about that after I posted and thought that you could stager the perches.  Anyway isn't it good luck to be pooped on by a bird (with feathers, before TMG starts)

It's generally considered a bad idea to have perches at different heights as it can cause fighting for top position

and i just thought about "bumble foot" a jump from a hight on a bigger bird  could cause it. Well I think so.

Ok so I have my perch 19 inch high (above nest box) I hope this is ok. We will be getting later on 5 pullets, Amber star, sussex, black rock, bluebelle and speckeldy.

Should be ok I hope.

Above the nest box is good because it encourages the chucks to roost rather sleep and poo in the nest boxes.
