Title: Table Birds
Post by: Caralou on July 08, 2009, 09:38
Anybody know of good suppliers for day olds such as Sasso in West Yorks, have tried all local suppliers listings and through the poultry listings, back of poultry mags and not having much luck. Once the Sussex have hatched and the cocks from that bunch have been designated for the table I want to only get small batchs of table birds to rear as have enough girls now for eggs so no more hatching for a couple of years for me.... Any info much appreciated, and hopefully we'll get them to list on here so others can find more easily  :)

we got some from Simon Skinner in Lincolnshire (poulet Anglais).  His driver dropped some off for us at the services on the A1 at doncaster. Grannie Annie has some previous posts about him, that's how I found out.  He sells Hubbards but last post I saw from Grannie Annie it said he is having trouble keeping up with supplying his main customers so might have a prob with supplying smaller customers.  I don't know if he travels up as far as Leeds.  might be worth  a try.  Our Hubbards have all done really well.  Very healthy fast growing birds.  We will be eating the biggest one prob this weekend, he's 8 1/2 weeks old!

Leeds shouldn't be a problem then if you got some at Scotch Corner.  We are already planning our next batch one these 13 are in the freezer.

Will have a look in that case. I hope to find a local supplier as intend to do in groups of 3-5 at a time (kept at the plot as opposed to back garden, but still space restricted). His hubbards sound good.

Have found 2 fairly local suppliers - freerangegoose (north yorks) and littlemortonfarm (south yorks). Both do them in small numbers and are a closeish drive for me so suspect I'll be giving littlemorton a go and sneak a few in with the sussex chicks if they hatch. Will be great to have proper fresh chicken  :D Def need the dispatcher training from Sam now TMG  :D

Little morton farm is south of chesterfield if it is the same place I got my last Hens from.  Great place but more North Notts/Derbyshire than south yorks.  It took me about 10 mins from junction 29 M1

Cara as you live at Leeds the best way to us is to come on the M62 then onto A1 south, but if you want the M1 then its the M62, onto the M1 south, then the A57 and then onto the A1. The A57 is often a pain the backside  >:(.  Which ever way you do it get off the A1 at Grantham and pick up the A52 towards Boston, call in at me first to meet the other girlies and then we can go straight to Grannies. Don't know how calling in near Chesterfield would fit in - but it would make for a very long day.

Simon is still having trouble supplying us little people I'm afraid!  His orders for day olds have risen from 12,000 a week to up to 100,000 a week!!!  and his farm just can't cope.  He is expanding, but can't do it quick enough.  mind you, he is still okay for hatching eggs, they were the last time I asked 35p each and he couriers them out so works out about £6.50 for 6 I think plus the egg costs.  we are also getting eggs from him at the end of this month

The farm I spoke to said £15 dozen hatching including courier costs, but really want to bypass the broody with them when I do it. I'll have a day trip out to one on the ones I've found when I'm ready to get them. Think they said £1.25 for day olds and add £0.50 per week if you want older up to 6 weeks old. Need to get my Plot set up properly first though. I already have the housing, just need to build a run, which I'm sure will require a bit of daddy help as I'm useless at that sort of thing.

Gosh his orders are huge! Must be thrilled at how he's expanding though, even if he is rushed off his feet. There's the new career plan for me
