« on: November 13, 2010, 11:12 »
I looked at them this morning In asda and thought they could ( to a chicken ) be easily mistaken for dried meal worms. So I tried them and the chooks went bazerk ha ha ha I don't know if I fooled them but if I didn't they sure do like rice crispies  :D

Don't be fooled, they're not that silly (the chickens). They probably just loved having something new and exciting. Good find! :D

They had some nice fresh sprats  at the saturday market this morning and you do get a lot for the money, the girls got one each . The greediest (normally) hen did not know what to do with it so lost out to the others after some very funny chasing and squabbling. :D

Fresh sprats for lunch today. :)

Oooh sprats. That takes me back. A Saturday night treat when I lived at home were sprats, or soft roes on toast, or if Mum and Dad were feeling generous, a bowl of shrimps. Yummy to all three.

Had them for tea with brown bread and a glass of bitter. Delicious + Omega 3 :)
Soft roes next but not sure the hens will get a taste. ;)

please be careful feeding cereals as they can be quite high in sugar.

They are delicious little oily fish, smaller than sardines, that you coat with flour, fry them in a pan for a few minutes each side. They taste better than sardines, a much milder flavour. They are a cheapish fish if I remember rightly, and go great with bread and butter with either lemon or vinegar.
Hope this helps, here endeth the cookery lesson.

I think 6.2/100 is pretty high for sugar, especially for chickens. Why not look at the label on your layers pellets/mash bag and see if there's any mention of sugar or salt.

mine always get the manky bit out of the bottom of the cerel packet - you know, the bits the kids wont eat with the powdery bits in.  Tis only a bit now and again, dont think a little will do any harm  :)

Well Ive learnt something. I didnt know there was sugar or salt in rice crispies. There's no real taste in them is there?
