Asparagus eaten but neighbour not
« on: September 20, 2014, 17:21 »
Hello all, this is my first post, i did a search but could not find anything like my question!

I started a few asparagus plants off last year and they were doing well and feathering nicely last week , but when i came to my allotment today, they had been destroyed down to about an inch from the soil, but my neighbours either side had not been affected...

Is there any possible explanation anyone could guess at what could have caused this as the only thing i can think of is vandalism as amy pest would surely eat their plants too?

My asparagus was much younger and smaller than the neighbours (who seem to be very well established and substantial bush size) - we do have pigeons and rabbits on the allotment - could this explain it?

Many thanks for your help!
Dave

I'd blame the rabbits, they seem to eat most things and as yours are young plants maybe they were a bit more tender. At least it's the end of the season, so hopefully the plants will already have developed a decent root system ready for next year.

I, too, am pleased that your neighbour hasn't been eaten  ;)  :tongue2:
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks for your replies, it turns out that my neighbour was trimming their asparagus and thought they dropped some on my allotment reached down and picked it up... Oh well - do you think it will kill it or will it be ok?

As long as the roots are still safely in the soil they will be OK.  If any are pulled up they will have to be replanted.  They will soon have to be cut down anyway.
