By contact - just like we get head lice. It can be on other birds in the flock or wild birds. Although contact is specified, like most creatures of this type they can survive for a small time on surfaces like pillows so if you have lots of wild birds then it probably arrived with them.

Thanks for the reply ehs284  . We do have many wild birds in and around our garden, so a couple of our chickens may have picked it up from them
