Title: Splitting tomatoes.
Post by: Bagpuss on August 18, 2007, 09:14
When I pick my tomatoes they start to split after a short while.  Quite a lot of them are already split on the plant. Is it to do with too much or too little watering? Can anyone tell me if I am doing something wrong? Thanks.

splitting is due to too much much water - after roots have dried.

basically too little water followed by far too much water.

Thanks. I had a feeling it was something to do with watering. Never mind,  I'll know next time. At least they still taste OK.

water morning and agian at night this will solve that problem .. when most folks go to water a multitude of toms they usually start at the back of the house and then work towards the door .the ones at the back nearest the glass get only  a drop of water .and the front get more . this is easily resolved by reciting the following when watering each pot /bag. " what a bunch of wassucks  the govt are" / with a hose this equates to about a 4 seconds  of water to each plant this is what i give mine daily in the morning and again as i said at night. for watering with a can you can make your own ditty up .but it still equates to about 6 seconds =4 pints or so  the average tom plant evaporates this daily when its hot  . leave the house open at night now to reduce the chances of blight or mould setting in .if your forcast for high winds then obviosly shut it up but leave the vents open. uneven watering causes more probs for toms than anything else . splitting .blossom end rot ...scab  .. skinny stems with this it is harder for the plant to carry fruit and they fall over usually breaking or stopping flow to the rest of the plant :)

I grow my tomatoes outdoors and on a normal year we water every other evening, unless there is a heat wave and then we water the plants every evening. Tomatoes need 'even' watering - not too much and not too little. Easier said than done with all the rain! Some varieties have naturally thin skins aswell.
