Which type of insecticide
« on: June 12, 2009, 15:49 »
Howdoo,

I am stuck between which insecticide to get. There are two types of Bug Clear, one for fruit and veg which is organic and the other is a non organic chemical based spray. Anybody any experience or views.   I have serious greenfly issues :(

Depends what you're using it for I suppose., although I'd get the organic one for fruit & veg as I'm sure you could use it on ornamentals too. The inorganic one must not be deemed suitable for fruit & veg presumably, so you couldn't use it on everything. Having said that, you could save your money & make up your own mix of :

1 cup veg oil
Half cup washing up liquid
Put in screw top jar & shake vigourously (the jar, not you!!)
Add 1 tablespoon of mix to 1 litre of water & spray.

That seems a lot of washing up liquid. I'd be worried about schorching the plants. You could use some bar soap grated and dissolved in water. You wouldn't need the oil then. I'd use a non-perfumed soap.

You're probably not allowed to use this anymore as it doesn't have EU approval, but you could describe it as foliar feed instead. ;)

Re: Which type of insecticide - Thrips!!

Thanks for that.  Just to correct myself I have found what pest is causing my broad bean problem (after an hour of searching the web!) and its not greenfly, its thrips.

My whole crop is riddled with them. They aint supposed to get as far north as Carlisle!! Has anyone any experience with them on broad bean plants? Will my crop be edible or should i just give up now. Every single flower ( about 200) have a little hole in the base of them and most of the growing tips and top leaves are badly deformed.

HEEEELLLPPPP

Here's some info from the RHS about thrips

http://www.rhs.org.uk/Advice/profiles0801/thrips.asp

Basically, it says check the label of whatever you plan to spray, to check it's ok for use on edible plants - lots of them aren't.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
