why would you want to sow so early??
« on: April 05, 2012, 10:01 »
why people are sowing early?
I was stressed out last month that I didnt sowed any brassicas at all. bought seed yesteday and picked my last years diary and saw I was 6 days late this year. and my successional sowing of brassicas last year produced florets exactly at the same time. in that case I am 2 week early  :)
why this obsession with early sowing and wasting huge amount of money in buying expensive seeds.
(I cried when I saw the price of brocolli F1 seeds yesterday....  :()
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

A lot of us have been asking that question for years!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Some of the F1s are resistant to club root so are worth buying - it means you can actually can grow them if you have club root on your plot  :)

It's always up to the individual how much they pay and where they buy seeds  ;)

Guilty...... but im new to this and have an excuse, im just too eager I guess, but the supplier i get my seeds from gives you so many, you can afford to try and have an early start

i just wanted a head start and get everything growing in a timely manner rather than rush. i only have a small portable green house with limited space. i didn't get my tomato's going until 2 weeks ago, wanted to get them going in Feb indoors and brassicas too indoors then outside in the green house.

Gambling on early sowing is sometimes worth it if you know what you're doing - beginners who don't do their gardening homework probably don't even realise they are gambling, and sometimes finish up disappointed.  :(
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

or

after being advised by more experienced gardeners that they had sowed too early and then spring turns into a scorcher with no frosts and they wonder what all the fuss is all about  :nowink:

I'm guilty of an early sowing and had to put splints and sellotape on tomato plant stems that have collapsed or broken because they got too big  so not having a go at beginners ... sometimes the best lessons learned are those from your own mistakes.  You never forget them quite so readily  ;)

And things that need a long season, like some of the chillies, have to be sown early.

I think we're really talking about stuff that doesn't need/want to be sown early.

Well yes, of course, and "early" is only "too early" when you are unable to provide the right conditions for them. which is where experience (and sometimes equipment) comes into the equation.

We were away last week; I had loads of texts from friends saying all the stuff they were starting in their greenhouses... I came back in a bit of a panic... Got myself set up in the greenhouse and started to look for those plastic label things.... then found one that said "Squash - Butternut - April 21st 2011"
Hmmm I seem to remember that everything came out just fine last year!

I'm going to wrap up what Ive done, bring some stuff inside, and leave the rest for a few more weeks. I think we had a frost down to -3 last night.
