broad bean germination
« on: April 20, 2020, 19:32 »
My husband asked me to grow some broad beans. I am not a fan so haven't grown them before. I bought a dwarf bean called the Sutton and sowed them in root training modules 10 days ago. Not a sausage! Should they be this slow to germinate? I have developed patience with my parsnip seeds but haven't a clue about what is normal for these chappies!

I think they will take a little longer.  Mine were sown in modules over 2 weeks ago now and have just started to come through in the last few days.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Ahhh my fave Broad Bean.
Yes they can take a little while longer. Another method by the welsh chap who was the radio years back, was it Terry Walton? Anyway his method was to pop a little damp compost into some plastic bag bags, pop say 5 seeds in then tie up and keep them in  a warm place, he used the airing cupboard at home, he then start to check their progress after the third day, once the shoot had appeared he would transplant to a pot.
I normally sow mine in Jan, they are tough cookies, mine are now full of flower and pods are not far away and not a blackfly in sight  ;)

Mine took 23 days to appear, and that was after pre-germinating them indoors (old seed, although all but one was still viable.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Hi there mine took around 3weeks too. I just popped them into a raised bed and left them to it at the end of March. I don’t think they really woke up till we had the rain and warmth. Just filled in a few spaces in the rows today with some more seeds. If you aren’t too keen have a google for recipes you can do quite a few things with them beyond just having them cooked straight.
Keep digging
