Morning,
I went to the allotment this morning and my broad beans which have survived frost after frost have got what looks like rust spots,some are okay but most have this.

Is there anything I can do or will I lose the lot,so upset first time growing bb's and they have been looking so healthy.

This is part of the reason that i don't plant mine until spring.

I never have a problem with them until they get fully grown then they get this rust (chocolate spot) on them, by this time im ready for picking.

Like i've said in other posts, i don't see the point in sowing in autum.

I autum plant so l dont get the blackfly l get with spring planted broad beans.

There's no need to wait that long. Put a dozen seed between damp toilet tissue, and they will start sprouting in a week. Plant in a 500gm yogurt pot and if the worst does happen you will have replacement plants. Try it as an experiment anyway and you will probably find they will crop at the same time.

I would not worry too much at this stage. The beans will probably grow away from it once we get some warm Spring weather. The disease only becomes really aggressive if the weather in May/June is cool and damp.

It is usually present in broad bean crops and sometimes the spots develop on the pods as well as the leaves. The beans inside are not affected.

It may not be chocolate spot. There are other fungi that also produce spots on the leaves.

My autumn sown broadbeans have survived so far but....... I don't really think they crop a huge amount earlier.... just planted them so as to have something else alive and growing through the depression of winter.....

Went back to lottie today and some bb plant s seem to have improved slightly
Have sprayed a little bordeaux mix and pray for some dryer weather.

Lighter note, p/sprouting and spring cabbages are looking good have cut some cabbages and dwarf cale ,sorry to whitter on this is our first time with allotment and can't wait to really get going in spring

Why did you spray with bordeaux mixture?

The guy who owns allotments was there and I asked what he thought it might be ,he thought that the copper in b/mix would help ..

Broad-bean chocolate spot?      I've no idea if this is a solution or not......

I tend to leave mine to get on with it - if they make it = great. If not = re-sow later.
