Both normally require at leat 3.5' between plants.

Do you mean you are growing marrows and squah in rows or planting between rows of other veg?

I plan 1 row of squash in the 1st row of my allotment, then next to that 1 of marrow which will be followed by parsnips

I would say that if you want to walk between the rows then allot 5 - 6'.
How long are these rows, sounds like an awful lot of squash and marrow?

I used to have two raised beds for my squashes/cougettes about 8ft by 4ft.
I'd fill them up each winter with manure (not necessarily well rotted) and by planting time the soil was perfect for them.

Not sure how this fits in with a crop rotation plan but I never had problems with them using this method, just had to remember where the base of the plants were for watering as the growth soon covered the whole of the beds and spilled onto the paths between. An upside down 2l drinkbottle worked for me  :)

I plant mine on the ends of the beds, and by mid to late Summer when they really start to sprawl I encourage them over the lawn - saves them invading the beds, or me having to allocate huge amounts of bed space for them

only 4 squash and 5 marrows, my row is 11ft, I thought I needed near 3ft between rows so if its 5-6inches Ives just gained a whole new lot of space!!!

5' is 5 foot (5" is 5 inches) as Kristen says

Just say that each squash needs a square 3ft 6 in x 3 ft 6ins and you wll be about right :) Leave extra space if you want a path.

They will not of course stay in their alloted square (unless you can be bothered to peg the growth round and round in a circle) but that's how to work your space out :)

Gosh they take up a fair bit of room then. Do sqush need full sun all day as I've got 6 babies to plant out in a few weeks and am now questioning where I was going to put them? Actually I don't know if I will have the space required :(

I cheat a bit and put two at the end of each of my 4' wide beds, they are only a couple of feet apart, but then get "encouraged" towards the lawn away from each other. So I plant 6 plants, 2 per bed, each bed 4' wide with, say, 18" between the beds. I suppose its more like a single row, now I think about it, but they only need about 2' total from the end of the bed, the rest of their growth is onto the lawn ... a photo would probably explain it better:

I've had mine all over the place.  End of rows, a derelict patch of land on the plot that we had not finished clearing.  Last year they went in after the onions came up.  I like a bit of squash but for me it's really for soups and Halloween, so i don't grow lots.

I allow 10 foot by 10 foot patch for 2 Butternut & 2 Squashkin plants and a bit less for three Jack o lanterns say 6 foot by 6 foot.  It requires a lot of feeding for that many plants on that space as it’s a bit less than usually recommended.
I find that cutting back the plants once the fruit you need is set helps them concentrate on fruit production and less on leaf growing, so I save a bit of space that way.

You don't even have to grow it together.  I'm planning two squash patches this year.  One Butternut/Squashkin patch on the ground after the first of the early spuds come up, and one Jack 'o' lantern Pumpkin patch down by the compost heap on my fruit plot.

For me they usually go straight in after the first early potatoes; having been waiting in 5" pots for a while. also scramble one or two through the understorey of the peas and beans, along with the sweetcorn stand.
