Lobelia in its second year...
« on: April 09, 2020, 14:43 »
Mrs Growster demands a lobelia show every year, and who am I to argue!

But, we can't get out to the GC, and were beginning to panic - until I just happened to notice some self-seeded tiny plants, as well as all last year's plants getting going again!

Is this common? I've potted them all on and have about twenty-five plants so am a happier bunny than having a furious Mrs Growster getting cross, which doesn't help one's normal, amiable attitude to life in general...

Will they revert? We liked the dark blue plants last year!

It has been a comparatively mild winter, so you've been lucky - 'cos lobelia is a tender perennial:) although not very long lived.
In Greece they often grew again and self-seeded every year in the gravel around the pots :D They always stayed the same blue - so fingers crossed for yours!

Aaah! Thank you Mum!

We've never noticed them before, and as they're usually in hanging baskets or similar, we usually just take out their companion geraniums and re-use those if we can, and compost the rest!

Never thought to re-use the Lobelia, so there's a bonus for once!

I forgot to empty a few pots last year that had lobelia in and they are growing back fine.  Decided to leave them and see what happens.  Why throw away a plant that is at least 'green' in a pot ?

My Lobelia always does that, and the bedding begonias, left in situ, always do as well.    Last year I had,  erm, maybe called 'Felicia' like a very small Michaelmas Daisy head, in lilac colour, very dainty.   I cut that back fairly hard about 3 weeks ago, and it is very happy.  :)  Mrs Bouquet

Thanks All!

I think this year is so different, I'm taking a longer, harder look at ways to do the garden than ever before, so there's sometimes a plus side to an emergency - if you can find it...

It is there Growster,  Have another long look, and think outside the box.  I have just come up with a new plan/idea for my rotten greenhouse.   Why has this taken me 2 years  ::)  Mrs Bouquet

Hi Growster, I've done this for a few years now, just collected my own seed and grown from that, and they are fine. All dark blue. If you'd like some seed just PM me, and I'll post it.

Hi, GandR! Great to hear from you again!

Thanks so much for the kind offer, but we've collected so many seedlings, plus we still have the originals, so we're OK now, but thanks for the thought!

Was thinking of you recently, as I bought a bumper book of Telegraph Cryptic crosswords, and am ploughing through no 45 at the moment! Great brain fodder too, superb clues!
