Birds are a nuisance -- does anyone else cut the little strawy bit of the top ???
I have tried cotton threads and nets with limited sucess - usually just have to keep putting them back. Would stress what others have said --- do NOT push into soil as that leads to rot etc.
I tend to put mine in around Good Friday as time permits. Shallots a bit earlier.

I use the trowel method and go contrary to the books and plant a little deeper so nothing shows above ground.

As I've mentioned in some spud threads, I don't go with Easter timings, as it can vary by over a month.

Shallots in first, certainly.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I lay some fleece or old net curtains over them till they show a bit of green, by then they are safe from the birds! Never known the birds to get through that :)

I agree DD about Easter being variable but in my case it is not about timing it is about opportunity and just getting enough time. Still in theory I should be getting a bit more time this year to do what I want -- in theory. Since I said I was going to do less the phone has never stopped ringing !!!!!!!!!!
