Mild onions
« on: October 24, 2017, 19:00 »
Can anyone recommend a good growing mild onion please.
My husband is moaning my onions are so strong when we cut into them and maybe we could try some milder ones.

Thank you

There are milder varieties you can plant, Ailsa Craig, Bedfordshire Champion, Globo, Sweet Spanish and Walla- Walla, but the soil and the fertilizer you use makes a difference to the taste as well. I think most of these varieties will have to be grown from seeds, rather than sets, though.

  Here  John says
Quote
The strong flavour of onions is caused by the sulphur content. High potash levels reduce the sulphur uptake so if you use low potash fertilizer you will get smaller but tastier onions

Logi06, could you please tell me the name of these "strong" onions, as I'm looking for some "strong" onions. Thank you. Arh.
ps. thank you for that info Mum, but I don't use any fertilizer other than manure.

It's all on this site, type in "onion seed" or something similar, (look at the top of the page). There's lots of info on growing onion from seed.
