over wintered spinich
« on: February 18, 2014, 08:36 »
I had some very small spinach plants in the autumn.  I put them in big black buckets.  Some in the greenhouse some outside.  They have continued to grow over the winter.  Will they continue to grow or go to seed.  I also have some kale in the ground which is producing new leaves at what point will it go to seed.

I think kale goes to seed around March-May, depending on the weather and where you are. Don't know about spinach, that's one of a few things I cannot seem to grow.

Spinach will run to seed once the days get longer as it flowers in its second year. Keeping picking it will delay this a bit.

The flowering shoots of kale can be picked while the buds are still closed and eaten like broccoli stems -- a handy second crop. if you keep picking, they can carry on producing through until the end of April at least. I had to pull mine up then as I needed the ground for the next crop, and my friend's chickens then feasted on the remains

Thanks Will keep them going as long as possible.  I have a winter lettuce in old tomato grow bag and I am wondering whether I should plant them out once the weather improves they are very immature plants.

You could do, or just move the grow bag outside, give them a nitrogen feed and put a cloche over them perhaps

I treat spinach, always used perpetual, much like a year round lettuce.
I always have spinach growing, its outside, but under a plastic cover in a raised bed.
It will eventually go to seed, but I find if you regularly pick it, you do extend the crop.
I tend to get some seed started now and again in the autumn, that gives me a good crop all year round.

Spinach might look a bit tatty if it's been out all winter but a quick trim of the dead leaves will work wonders.  Yummy spinach, more curry. Yay  :tongue2:
