Hi

I have recently purchased 2 rabbits and every couple of days hav eto clear them out.
This consists of hay,sawdust and of course the rabbits waste products. Can anyone advise on whether this can be added to the compost heap rather than throwing it down the local tip ?

Yes...bung it all in! Make sure you put green stuff and kitchen waste in too or it will be a bit dry....

Actually, rabbit droppings are very mild and can be added directly around plants with no worry of burning. And if you prefer, you can add it to compost.

The only thing to watch for with bunny bedding around plants if it hasn't been composted to check for left over food, and hay seeds mixed in else you may end up with extra plants growing.

Used to know a (slightly mad) lady who would collect the dropped hay from under her horses hay net to sprinkle in the fields as she thought it would re-seed the bare patches- and it did seem to work- so bunny hay may well give you the same effect!

I add every other load of ours to the compost heap, we have two htches and they make rather a lot.

just make sure you add plenty of green and the occasional bucket of water.

This is my first proper year of gardening after a little dabble last year - first year for a compost heap.
 
We only have the one rabbit but it's waste now goes on the compost heap. My wife is delighted as it's the first time I've taken an interest in cleaning him out.

Yep, you can avoid cleaning quite so often if you litter train them and then just clean the tray out, and do the rest of the hutch a little less often. If you feed complete pellets (better than mix anyway) you won't have such an issue with the grain growing into oats etc.

Its when your wife finds you gently squeezing the rabbit to get more 'products' from him she will really worry!

And you do have a good way to get rid of dandelions and carrot tops now!
