I thought these were supposed to be suitable for hanging baskets?! Mine are already 1.5 feet high and growing fast. Look no different to the red alert bush variety next to them. I don't think they're leggy, just big! Anyone else grown them?

I grew them last year in a hanging basket, was planning on doing the same this year but they haven't germinated yet, might have to resow. Is it possible you mixed the seeds up? I do remember them being taller than I expected at the start but they 'bushed' out

The ones I grew last year were big and bushy. Had 100's and 1000's of tiny tomatoes on them though which lasted for ages, but I decided they were too fiddly to pick, so not doing them again.
Nice novelty though! ;)

I'm having a go at 'Gartenperle' which I think are similar (small bush cherry tomato for pots/baskets) and they're also scaring me with the size they have grown already :)
Hoping to repot into bigger containers to go outside when it warms up a bit more (no greenhouse unfortunately). Haven't grown tomatoes from seed before so all new to me!

I like Gartenperle. They are not quite as small as 100's and 1000's! :)

Grew 100s and 1000s last year and found they got very leggy without bright light --masses of tiny toms though that tasted lush
This year only had 2 seeds left

I'm another Gartenperle fan. I've grown them for the past three years. Even last year, which was desperately bad weather for tomatoes, I had a ridiculously big crop from them. I've still got a big bag of them in the freezer even now. I think they do need the biggest size of hanging basket. I originally tried them in the next size down and they started looking a bit poorly, so I moved them to a bigger basket (16", I think) and they romped away. And I think the fruit are the perfect cherry tomatoes, proper cherries, nice and sweet, but not so small they're more like berries than tomatoes. They seem to grow faster than I can pick them. My dogs sit underneath the baskets waiting for one to fall because they think they're lush too.

well i grew some last year and even though i started them off in mid may - i still got a great crop off of them - needless to say ive got around 10 plants on the go :). im starting to worry now where they will go - considering that ive got around ten varieties of toms on the go this year (with around 10 of each variety :ohmy:)

I'm more of a fan of Gartenperle for hanging baskets than 100s and 1000s. :)

Sorry to ask more questions but am wondering what would be the smallest sensible container size I can get away with for Gartenperle (or other similar types)? I have a couple that are about 20cm tall now that really need repotting and have another tray that have just germinated - think I may have sown far more than we need..

I've got mine in 8 or 9in pots now - I won't be giving them bigger pots than that ;)

I usually stick to tumbling tom tomatoes for my hanging baskets.

Always best to sow more than needed in case of failures, but I hate throwing good plants away, so I try to grow them all! But one year I had to give a load away on Freecycle as I just ran out of space! :)

Bear in mind that the depth of the container matters as well as the width of it. Hanging baskets are quite shallow so they won't hold much compost unless they're pretty wide, which means less food and less water for the plants. With a pot or tub, which is deeper, you won't need such a big size.

Thanks for the advice, will pot them up into bigger pots and see how they do. Ironically I don't actually like tomatoes myself (unless in tomato sauce form) but my wife loves them. Will find a home for the extras too, might take them into work or something.
