Title: is this a nice worm or nasty worm?
Post by: kezlou on June 08, 2008, 13:35
I found these in my soil and i'm wondering if they are nice or nasty?

I am planning to grow veg in this soil but i'm worried that i might find nasty little worms hidden inside the produce.

Any help would be amazing thanks a lot.

Kerry

Sorry about the pics they the best i could get, with my rubbish camera. They are about 3cm long very thin about 1/2 mm wide. They are a very pale white/ grey waxy colour and they seem to love the dirt.

They could be the young of the common grey earthworm, Kerry.....if so they're harmless and good for your plants ;)

Thanks everyone for your help, i really hope they are baby earthworms  :?

If knowing my luck they are not, what exactly are Horse hair worms how bad / good are they? Can i still plant veg in the soil they are in?

Horse hair worms are notoriously long Kerry, so I don't think it's those. Also you wouldn't be likely to find their young in soil, as the eggs are laid in water.
They're good for the garden too anyway, because they kill nasty bugs  :D

Google eelworms and leather jackets, if not them you probably want to leave alone, hard to say much, without a good lookie.

Well after looking at the info about eelworms and leather jackets i'm beginning to feel a bit ill. Images of the eelworms were absolutely rank and they so many different types for different things.

Think i'll have another dig in the mud and see if i can some more for another look at them.

Hope they are earthworms.  :?
