Gone blank
« on: July 20, 2011, 19:33 »
For the bend on tubing to make a poly tunnel 8ft wide how long would the tube need to be, im thinking of using the tube i have had on the plot for months to try and make a poly tunnel or do i just weigh it all in at the scrap yard and put the money towards a good one.

Thanks
Kris

C = pi x diameter. :)

Your tube length will also depend on the desired height of your tunnel Kris. You could build yourself a sturdy polytunnel if you source suitable materials or you could buy a decent one for, what, a few hundred pounds upwards?

C = 3.142 x 8 = 24.992 divide by two = 12.496 minimum pipe.   Add extra for more height as that gives an apex of four foot.  An extra four foot would give a six foot apex. if you see what I mean.

This link gives instructions for building one
http://www.overthegardengate.net/UserPages/pp_view.asp?FName=polytunnel&Page=1

and it says you need 19ft lengths for a 10ft wide tunnel with a height at the apex of about 8ft..thought it might give you some idea  ;)

This one has 3 metre lengths of pipe - 19 feet is very roughly twice that...

But the bent plastic tube is on top of straight scaffolding poles. To get a headroom of 8ft without the scaffolding poles, you would need a pipe of 21 ft 8 inches. A 19ft length would give an apex of  just under 6ft 8 inches.
Any day above ground is a good day.

Thanks fine people, i might just get 19ft if i have 2 tubes bent and welded together. But then i did bid and offer £50 for a 25m x 12m frame and they might take it i got and hour or so to make up my mind i guess this would make a tunnel for me and one for my dad.  Im really not sure what to do at the moment  :wacko:  I would have 2 green house's to sell if i went with the tunnel idea and a lot more space to grow in side. 8)

Update i thought about the tunnel frame and said no to £50  :( then just got an email saying they would take £40  :D I am made up as it will be a great help having the tunnel and giving me a longer growing season and more exotic species to grow.

Well its like this i can gain permission from the allotment officer   ;) with an email for any size i want. Its is very big for an allotment. Do i see if i can cut it down in size in width or just go for it as it is the cover will be about £130 not to bad as i sold the 4x6 greenhouse for the cost of the frame. The 8x6 will give me a good amount towards the cover for the tunnel if i can sell it  :D.
