Garlic needing an extended cold snap.
« on: August 29, 2023, 11:34 »
Good morning everyone,  just Gurgling to see if there is any new novel methods to growing garlic.  I came across this.

"Garlic is usually planted in late autumn or early winter, as it needs a period of cold – most varieties need one to two months at 0–10°C (32–50°F) for good bulb"[/b]

One or two MONTHS at 0-10 C,  how best to carry this out?  It seems a bit extreme for me...

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

0-10C, isn't that just winter?  :D
I doubt they see very low temps on the Isle of White, but the garlic farm there is successful  :D With

Who say

"Plant in Autumn from September to December - Plant in Spring, from January to late March ."
Which depends on the variety you choose.

I'd just add that you have to remember the soil temperature in Winter is lower than the atmospheric temperature so even a balmy 14c day in December will unlikely see the soil temperature rise much above a few degrees.

I've seen slugs out on Christmas day recently where the tempreture is warmer that what we had in July,  I really dont know what the answer is, natural cycle of the earth or global warming. My head is sore trying to figure this out
