Seedlings in greenhouse and cold snap over the weekend
« on: February 21, 2013, 06:14 »
I've got seedlings of brassicas and leeks all doing very nicely in the greenhouse and I cover them each night with fleece, removing it during the day. The weather is not going to get much above freezing day or night for the next few days so should I leave the fleece on all the time? Will the see.dings go leggy because of the low light level under the fleece? I use a double layer as the fleece is not that thick.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

Mine aren't that big yet that's why I am not sure how they will get on. Oh we'll, if it all goes wrong I can sow more but that will be a shame.

The temperature is forecast to dip only just below 0 at night, so they should be OK.

During the day it will warm up in the greenhouse due to the light on it, even if the temperature doesn't get up much. This is the, err, greenhouse effect"

If in doubt, throw a bit of fleece over them at night, or even bring them into a cool area of the house.

Personally I wouldn't worry.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My onions and leeks have been forced to go out in the flimsy plastic 'tomato house' thingy, and have coped OK with a couple of really hard frosts.

(needed the space in the big greenhouse for sowing other things  ;) )

My green house got up to 38degC last weekend even with the automatic windows open (no insulation or heating).  So I hope the onion seeds will be OK!

Even though the temps may not get much above freezing, the plants are sheltered from the wind chill. They will be fine sturdy and hardier plants for surviving the cold a bit.
