I suggest a new thread Alby - some of us are easily confused!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

with respect to smud6ie I suggested it was a turnip knife several postings earlier .....
In north Lincolnshire we perhaps also called it a mangel knife or beet knife.

Sorry RichardA ,as I knew  what is was I fell into the common trap of not reading every one the previous posts before replying.
Yes the old boys here  when i was a lad  also referred to the crop as mangles,we also used to go hoeing, thinning  them for pocket money before I grew up and had an holding of my own.

I can just remember hoeing beet seedlings to get the right spacing (they called it chopping beet) with my dad (they were paid so much a row and I know that we had a little more to spend on our week's hols because my dad worked every hour he could chopping beet) and can certainly remember chipping swedes and turnips for cattle feed in the winter.Cattle also used to be fed on sugar beet cake - some sort of waste product from the sugar beet factories - I will never forget that smell - like brown sugar and biscuit all in one.
