Heras fence for runner bean/cucumber
« on: February 26, 2012, 07:54 »
Lots of people in our allotment started getting & installed the 8 feet tall fences this year, wondering if it is proved a good material for plants support?  I heard metal can become too hot in the sun and might hurt the plants.

Anyone has any experience on this please?

I was given these metal grills last year and grew Alderman peas up them with no problems. Like the fencing, the mesh is quite thin, is a reflective silver colour, so the heat retaining properties are low.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

How do you get to the peas in the middle DD (you would have to be 'waffer thin' to get in there)?  :D

The peas don't grow in the middle, they climb up the outside.

Just a thought.

I think runner beans will find it difficult to climb up that sort of fencing. They like an uninterrupted pole to wind themselves around.
