Tomato seedlings
« on: February 25, 2007, 18:38 »
My tomato seedlings popped through on Tuesday. All have the two leaves at the top and have grown to between 5 and 10 cm tall already.

They are in a modular tray wotsit and each module is apporx 1.5 inches x 1.5 inches. My question is how long til I move them to larger tray/small pots please?

Thanks

I'd move them now.  Hold them by the leaves, not the stems and put them in pots.  Give them a drink. They'll look a bit sorry for themselves at first but they'll pick up quickly.  :D

Get them into a window, if not already, stand them in a box with the front cut off & line the other sides with aluminium foil. They'll get light from all sides then.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've found that if you can get some ally foil, at least behind them, you don't have to keep rotating them.

Well they are on my biggest, brightest windowsill and they get turned once or twice a day. (sun rises at the back of house and sets at front - no windows at the sides either unfortunately)

Will try the foil thing then.

Thanks

As Mrs. Veg said, I'd pot them up now, they really shouldn't have got that tall in that length of time. I'd pot them up quite deep. Then surround them with the foil.

Well I have done the foil thing but they will have to wait til tomorrow evening to be potted up. Ive been mucky all day. Just showered, changed, got dinner to do and stuff for work tomorrow..

Will get em potted tomorrow

Oh forgot to mention there are two different types. The beefsteak ones are about 5cm tall and the red pear are about 10cm tall.

I would say that's a no then. Tomatoes require a bit more heat than 'just keeping the frost off'.

I think you may have been a tad early!

they are a bit of a test really as I've only planted a few and a few chillis, the main crop will be next month.... I'll repot them and keep them in the house and see what happens..
