Blue water pipe design change
« on: June 15, 2010, 22:45 »
I began using the pipe to hold up netting a while ago.  I used a system of hoops which needed stabilising in some way to make them strong enough for purpose.

However, after a total rethink I tried out a different design and came up with this.  It is much more stable and needs no extra support.  It does use a little extra pipe but I think the benefits are worth it.

Just cross the pipes and create a dome effect, fixing them in the middle at the top.  I also put extra screws in around the wooden borders unscrewed by one turn.  The net will hook onto the screws and hold it in place.

Cheese makes everything better.

That is brilliant, I like your design.
May i make a suggestion, I use 1 1/4" waste pipe cut too 18-24" to support my blue pipe, just hammer into the ground to a sturdy depth it will keep the bottoms from bending and upright.
It's also re-usable, if you have to move it next year.

Very interesting, Ice. It has a very futuristic look.

So far I am finding that there is no need for anything to to support the pipe other than pushing it into the soil.  The arch shape is very structurally sound and tying them at the apex helps to maintain the integrity of the form.

Just thought I would pass it on as it has proven itself to be a good idea for my small patch.

TRY USING 15MM copper piping , set into the ground then feed the blue pipe over the top,

2ft lengths should be enough

Any chance you could possibly let me know the length of the pipework on your beds please?

I think they are great.

The lengths will be determined by your bed size..

I have some yellow gas pipe coming from work which otherwise we have to pay to get recycled. I'm so excited, I can't wait to build it! I want Ice's plot too!
My husband's a water sign, I'm an earth sign, together we make mud :-)

My gardening diary is here - go on, have a peek , you might be able to help me!
