Naga Chilli - Will they overwinter?
« on: September 11, 2011, 16:00 »
I know I planted my Naga chilli seeds a bit late, but they have grown at a snails pace, still not very tall and never flowered.  After all the tlc I'm a bit loathed to put them on the compost heap and start again next year (as now I've read that germinating them can be troublesome anyway).  So is it worth overwintering them??

If so, what's the best way to keep them?  Should I chop them back now?

If you have no peppers yet, you're not likely to get anything this season.

Worth overwintering.... I don't think so, but then I've never had germination problems. If you want to try, you could cut them back now but I think its a little early. Just do it before the first frost, trim the tops and roots and re-pot in good compost and put somewhere frost free but cool and light. You could also try taking some cuttings and striking those.

Does that mean that my chilli plant will not fruit? Its on the kitchen window ledge and its always warm and it has lots of flowers on it.

It depends on the variety.

If its a naga variant as the OPs is it may set fruit that remain small and don't ripen, if its an annum it may produce ripe peppers slowly.

Not sure of the variety. It was planted from saved seed from the supermarket.

Nothing to lose then. Give it a go  :)

I find that any I overwinter usually flower earlier than those grown from seed, so this might help with  getting ripe fruit by the end of the season  :D

I tried overwintering a couple of Superchilli plants last year, one died and the other one came back well. I also overwintered a sweet pepper plant, and it's the only sweet pepper that has given me fruit this year, all the newly sown ones haven't given me a single fruit.

I'm going to try it this winter with my Fataalii chillis, because I sowed them in February but they have only just reached about 6" in height with not a sign of a flower. I'm not even sure I'm going to cut them back, because they're so small I don't see how I can.

Here's a good place for advice on overwintering chillis. He does say it's a good idea for varieties like Naga because their fruiting season is so short.

Thank you all.  I have a a small amount of window space (eldest teen off to uni so I'll commandeer his windowsill!!) so I guess I've nothing to lose.  Will leave them a while longer then maybe a trim rather than a cut back and fingers crossed!!

Just to add to the confusion over chillies noticed, just this afternoon, that the cayenne, devil red and birdseye plants have all come back into flower - must be the 10 minutes of sun we had today!! If they're unlikely to fruit now, should I continue to feed them??  (tho with the exception of the birdseye which is flowering for the first time this year, the rest all have fruit in various stages of ripening at the moment)

They will carry on fruiting for a while and once the fruits are set (and they don't need insect help usually  ;) ) they will ripen off alright, just slowly.

Careful not to overwater plants in the winter, and they benefit from some foil in front of them to reflect light on all sides (DD's trick, not mine). Stops them goin lopsided/leggy so much

Foil - that is such a great tip!  One of mine is very lop sided despite turning it regularly!

Just checked my Naga plants - they're looking a bit pot bound  - should I repot them to give them some extra growing time before trimming them back and putting into smaller pots to overwinter (article on overwintering now read  :tongue2: ).  Don't think they've been in too small a pot for long ... they have been growing very s l o w l y since the start
