Title: Hello from the Wild West (West London anyway)
Post by: ChuparosaChap on May 13, 2015, 21:34
Hi all, hope the weather is being kind.

I'm new to gardening, having only picked it up last spring, growing toms & beans in my greenhouse.

Now I have an allotment that I've just taken over, and although I'm quite good for a beginner, I really could do with hearing the voice of experience on occasions :)
I'm confident in my ability, but I'm very green really.

My plot hasn't been worked in 2 years, and it's pretty wild, so I'll be covering most of it for now.
I love hearty food crops like spuds & toms, and I'm interested in promoting bio-diversity & creating habitats.
More than anything, I just want good, natural food.

So is there somewhere I can get a journal up?
Cheers

Howdy Pardner! There is a diary section on this site, but I find it really useful to keep a paper diary. You could do it on a pc, but I'm old fashioned.

Hi ya, from East London.  :)You will get lots of advice for your allotment here.

We took on our allotment five years ago and it was derelict and brambles taller than me. We still have a way to go before it is completely ship shape but we are a good way there and are on our way to being mostly self sufficient.

It will take time to get your plot to your liking so go at it in bite size chunks. Rome wasn't built in a day. ;)

And I'm not far away either, just over Kew Bridge and up towards Sheen Common.

I second the advice of a little at a time, clear an area, then plant it or cover it.  Don't always take my own advice so I know from experience that you feel pretty fed up coming back after a couple of weeks to find the patch you cleared, covered in weeds again!  Good luck.

Welcome to the site and congrats on your new lotty  :)

There's a diary section on here - you set up a thread in the Diary section itself, which is where you put all your updates - only you can post in that thread.  Also start a thread in the Diary Comments section, which is where everyone can comment on your diary thread.

Enjoy.
