But be aware none of the overwintering onions are good for storing for very long.
They are a sort of stop-gap for when last summers stored onions are used up and before this years spring planted ones are ready :)

oh Bum - I didn't realise this! I assume it's too late to plant any onions for this summer even from sets?

Thought I was being clever planting onions overwinter so I could use the patch for salads in the summer when I'd pulled them up.

You'll be lucky to get sets!

I was late planting last year - I had the sets to hand.  Wasn't worth the effort.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Glad i seen this post !!

I have around 100 in the ground and about halft have started to "fall over". I take it this is called bolting ??

Some of them look like they have large bulbs, some not so large. Is this normal then ??

What i did notice over the last few weeks is i can see a lot more of the actual bulb than i could.

Again is this normal ???

You could sow a load of salad onions now (I would say spring onions, but thought that might be confusing :)). Too late for proper bulb onions though, yes.

They should be bulbing up now and the size will vary. Bolting is when they run prematurely to seed. It could be the wind that has blown them over, they will bend over when they have about reached maturity, but it's a bit early for that.

HI DD,

Should i do
Glad i seen this post !!

Sould i do anything like attempt to straighten them up or will this cause more harm ??
On some of the onions i can see about a 3rd of the bulb - should i cover up with soil / compost etc or just leave them as they are ???

HELP  ??? ??? ??? ???

Leave them alone!

Bulbs grow above the soil, if you attempt to straighten the stems you may snap them off completely.
