Hatched against the odds
« on: May 30, 2011, 20:22 »
Maggie was a sweet little cockoo maran.  She had been brought down here by my grandson to spend her retirement free ranging with my girls. She was getting on a bit so didn't lay very often but when she did it was a lovely dark brown egg.
One evening I noticed she had a terrible prolapse, we had no choice but to  cull her.  :(
I'd still got her last 2 eggs in the fridge, one about 7days old, one 10days. I brought them up to room temperature over a few days and put them under a broodie.
They have both hatched

I'm so pleased to still have a little bit of her about
Now for little Goldie  :)

Some of my hens have a thing about plastic.  When I found 3 eggs on a pile if dustbin bags i marked them with a permanent marker and each day took out the fresh eggs. This worked well for a couple of weeks, the eggs being sat on each day by severel hens while they laid their egg.  One day i lifted Goldie off and realised she had gone broodie on the old stale marked eggs.  I left her thinking they were so old they would never hatch.  But of course they did, all three.  ::)

Unfortunatly Goldie took an instant dislike to one of the chicks and killed it but is being a loving mother to the remaining two :)

Here they are

Thanks peeps, just when i'm trying to reduce  numbers as well.   :D But it shows what tough little critters they are.  :)

Makes you wonder if all the egg turning we are supposed to do with fertile eggs is really necessary. ::)
