removing hen from chiks

We have only ever reared chicks with a incubator antill this year when we decided to trust in nature,
Does anyone no at what age i can remove the mother hen from the chicks and how this will effect both the hen and the chicks;

usually the mum will let the chicks know when she's had enough - last year mine did this at 8 weeks but this year they left the chicks at 5 weeks to go back to their own coups. the chicks will cheep a bit but soon get over it
