Raspberry recommendation?
« on: September 21, 2010, 12:00 »
Hi.

I planted a few Autumn Bliss and Joan J this Spring (I know the previous Autumn would have been better but there you go). I'm getting a small crop (as expected) although the Joan J are doing very well, considering. I really like the Joan J but the Autumn Bliss are watery and tasteless.

So, a specific question. Does anyone who grows Joan J and likes them also grow another variety which they also think produce good flavoured berries? i.e. what varieties produce really flavourful fruit when grown in the same soil as Joan J?

Please only answer if you grow Joan J as well and like them. I'm thinking that this is a better way to ask for a recommendation than a general 'what's the best raspberry?'. It takes account of the soil at least but not the other growing conditions, of course.

Thanks.

Hi

I grow Joan J and also Brice, which I'm led to believe is bred by the same chap that created Joan J (so I'm guessing a hybrid).

I can't honestly comment which is better as I did my usual trick of not bothering to label which canes were which when first planted. The berries off both plants taste lovely though and some of them are seriously large. Then again, I'm quite small...

Thanks. I've never heard of Brice. I'll google for it.

I can highly recommend tulameen as an autumn fruiting variety.

Huge crop of large, pointy fruits with an excellent flavour  :D :D

Thanks.

Is tulameen really an autmnn variety? I've seen some sites say that it's a main season one e.g. Marshalls says that it's a "main season floricane" and  is "Ready to pick from mid/late July, cropping for about 4 weeks." That doesn't seem like an autumn variety to me - I'm picking Joan J now and the Autum Bliss are just starting and they are both autumn varieties

What is your experience? I live in East devon - will Tulameen be nice and early for me and be a good fit for Joan J?

Also, how long would I have to wait for fruit if I planted bare root tulameen plants this autumn? Summer of 2012 maybe?

Thanks.

I planted tulameens in March, and they started fruiting in August and are still going strong.

I think they are a late mid season variety technically.

I'd think it would fruit ealryish down where you are, ie perhaps mid July onwards.

Fantastic flavour and shape. freezes well too  :D

If you plant now you should get a crop next year  :)
