Last year I planted my sets at the end of Sept..............they romped away and were easily 4" tall by this time. (I'm a little later this year.) They went on to give me good onions and garlic so don't panic yet. It has been quite mild as of yet during the day and only the last few nights has it started to get noticeably colder. They should be fine.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

mine are romping away at about 4 or 5 inches high, its my 1st attempt at onions and i just hope theyre not growing to quickly and will suffer with the frosts to come.

I also planted my onion and garlic at the end of September, I've been told it's a good time to plant so they produce a healthy root system before the cold, wet weather really starts.
Apparently this reduces the chances of rot, anyway, here's hoping.

Same here, fingers crossed to are ok.  Had no prob with the spring plantings (from sets) despite some rotten wet weather in the first few weeks, am tempted to cover mine with old plastic bottles and the like, when the weather gets really cold.  (This is nice and easy as the bed is 2 feet from the back door )

Don't molly coddle them - they'll stand the cold, that's why they're winter onions!

If you cosset them, you are likely to make them more prone to bolt.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I planted some two weeks ago from sets and the onions are several inches tall. Garlic is doing more slowly but they have sprouted at least. The shallots have only just started to sprout.
