How do I prune my cherry into a nice bush/vase shape?
« on: December 30, 2013, 20:35 »
I am planning to plant out this cherry which has been in a pot for a few years (hopefully there is a photo attached).

It is a shapeless lanky tree with all the buds at the ends of the branches.  Can I/how do I prune it into a better shape?  I am thinking push or spindle rather that a standard shape, as I don't want it too tall.

Wait until the sap is rising ie after March with stone fruit. Cut just above an outward facing bud. i would take the centre out down to the side branches if you want a bush. I think you will find it grows better when its in the ground it was a very small pot.

Thank you.  I am still trying to attach a photo you can actually see.  I wanted to chop the leader right down, but I was worried it would be too much.  Do I cut all the side branches back to an outward facing bud too?  By about a half?
