Mixed Corn Question
« on: June 15, 2015, 15:54 »
Hello,

Can someone clarify my understanding about "corn" please?  I understand that giving chickens corn is like giving children sweets, OK as an occasional treat but not something for everyday use.

So my question is, is that what is sold as "mixed corn" or do they mean corn as in "maize"?

I ask as it is possible to buy large 20KG bags of mixed corn (and I have bought one by mistake), which seems an awful lot of treats.  Especially for my 3 chickens.

Many thanks

Hitman

Thanks,

So is it OK to use it as a general feed not just a treat?

The highest percentage grain in most poultry feed is corn, so corn is fed every day anyway if one is feeding bagged feeds to their chickens.  When plain ol' corn by itself is being fed for over 50% of their daily ration when fed as training or treats, that's when the imbalance occurs.  As long as it is fed along with a more balanced ration and it doesn't exceed more than 50% of their daily nutrition, there's  nothing wrong in throwing down a handful of corn every day.

As our chickens main food is layers pellets, which has everything in it.  We use mixed corn as their treat, only a handful a day for each chook!  Yes a big bag will last a long time, but it won't go off if kept cool and dark and away from mice and rats.

When I picked up my hens from their holiday last October Julie's husband sold me a sack of mixed corn instead of layer pellets . When we noticed the mistake I got it swapped out. My 3 would take years to eat 20kg of corn, a 5kg bag lasts longer than their bag of layers pellets.

Having suffered soft shell I am carefull on how much corn they get, I have layer pellets in the conservatory for them to browse on, as well as that in their run
rip Sandy, rip Beryl, Henrietta

Know what would be nice in your garden, a few hens lol
